Prince George, BC, City, pop 75 150 (1996c), 69 653 (1991c),
67 621 (1986c), area 315.94 km2, inc 1915, is the third largest
population centre in the province.
It is situated in the geographical centre of BC at the junction
of the NECHAKO and FRASER rivers, 784 km N of Vancouver by
road.
The aboriginal inhabitants, the Carrier Dene people, aided
Alexander MACKENZIE on his journey to the Pacific coast in
1793.
Economy
Prince George has large railway yards and locomotive repair
shops to service grain, coal and lumber trains to the coast.
It is the divisional headquarters on the Tete Jaune Cache/Prince
Rupert CNR line and the northern terminus for passenger service
on the BC Ry, formerly the Pacific Great Eastern Ry (PGE).
From 1952-58, it was the northern terminus for the PGE, until
the line was extended to Dawson Creek, then Fort Nelson. The
city is a major highway junction and the airport is served
by Canadian Airlines International.
