Iqaluit, Nunavut.
pop 4220 (1996c), 3552 (1991c), area 45.06 km2, inc 1980,
is the capital of the new territory of Nunawut.
It is located near the northeast head of FROBISHER BAY on
southern BAFFIN ISLAND. Its name means "place of fish" in
Inuktitut.
Today, there is a multicultural population with over 60%
Inuit and 6% French. The town has a mixture of modern conveniences
and services with traditional Inuit culture. The French population
has a French-language radio station; a local newspaper, Nunatsiaq
News, is published weekly; and there is a range of stores,
restaurants and accommodations as well as recreational facilities
such as a theatre and library. The Inuit still value their
traditional lifestyle of fishing for Arctic char, sealing
and carving. The Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum displays artifacts
on the history of southern Baffin Island and of local artists.
The museum is housed in one of the buildings of the Hudson's
Bay Company's trading post (1949).
