Q: Can you help me find a job, tell me in which occupation I should apply and give me specific advice about my application before I commit to paying the processing fee, gathering the documents and undergoing a medical examination?
A: Unfortunately the Consulate does not have the personnel to provide this type of assistance. The immigration selection criteria and process require potential immigrants to prove their own initiative, resourcefulness and motivation by researching their employment prospects, finding out if their qualifications and experience are transferable to the Canadian labour market and then to assess themselves on the point system. A self-assessment guide is included in the application kit. The application kit should provide you with enough information to determine if you are likely to qualify.

Q: Will my original documents be returned to me at the end of the application?
A: With the exception of Police Certificates, original documents should not be submitted unless specifically requested, because they will not likely be returned.
Q: I am now retired and receiving a pension. I have sufficient funds to support myself. I would like to retire in Canada. What type of application must I complete?
A: Canada no longer has a "retired category" for immigration. You may wish to read through one or all of the application kits to determine if you qualify in another category. The quickest and easiest way to read the application kits is to view them from this web site. You may also ask for an application kit to be sent to you in the mail.

Q: I am applying under the Independent category. Can I pay my processing fees in Canada and send you the official receipt?
A: No. You cannot pay in Canada for an application made outside Canada. You must send the correct fee with your application. Family Class applicants are the only exception, as Family Class applicant fees are always paid in Canada. Details of fees are included with each application kit. The Consulate does not accept credit cards or personal cheques. If you paid a fee in Canada in error, you can request a refund by calling the Canada Immigration Call Centre at 1-888-242-2100.
Q: If I don't pay the Right of Landing Fee (ROLF) with my application, where and when should I pay it?
A: Your ROLF will be requested by the Consulate at the appropriate time. In most cases, you will pay the ROLF to the same office where you paid the processing fee (unless the file was transferred to another office). Sponsors of Family Class applicants must pay the ROLF in Canada. The Case Processing Centre (CPC) will contact the sponsor when it is time to pay the ROLF for a Family Class application.

Q: Can I sponsor my daughter, her husband and their three children for immigration to Canada?
A: You cannot sponsor a son or daughter who does not meet the definition of "dependant" as defined in the Immigration Act and Regulations. To obtain more information concerning the definition of "dependant," please call the Canada Immigration Call Centre at 1-888-242-2100.
Q: Do I have to submit all the required documents with my application?
A: Not necessarily, but it is preferable. If you have all the documents with the exception of a police certificate, you may submit the application to our office. The Consulate will begin processing your application, however, without all the documents your file will not be complete. Please be advised that if there are insufficient documents, our office may not be able to accurately assess your application which may lead to refusal. Before submitting your application, please take a few extra minutes to review your entire application to ensure that ALL the questions on the application form have been answered (if the question does not apply please write N/A); the correct fee has been included; three recent passport size photographs are attached for EACH family member and all documentation in support of the application is included. Once the processing fee has been collected at the Consulate, a refund will NOT be issued. It is in your best interest to submit a complete application.

Q: I am currently living overseas. Can I apply for permanent residence through the Buffalo Regional Programme Centre?
A: Applications for permanent residence can be submitted at any Canadian diplomatic mission where facilities for dealing with this type of application exist. Applicants should bear in mind that individuals who submit applications to missions outside their country of permanent residence will likely be required to attend a personal interview and that this interview must be conducted at the mission where the application has been submitted. Spouses and dependent children over the age of 18 of such applicants, may also be required to attend a personal interview. Any travel arrangements or cost associated with attending the interview are the responsibility of the applicant. As well, failure to attend a personal interview will lead to the refusal of the applicant(s) concerned.
Q: What is the procedure to sponsor someone?
A: Sponsors in Canada should contact the Citizenship and Immigration Call Centre at 1-888-242-2100. This is a toll-free number. The sponsor must obtain a sponsorship kit from the Call Centre, which will provide instructions for initiating a sponsorship. Sponsors who are Canadian Citizens, residing temporarily in the USA, and want to sponsor their spouse and/or child(ren) may request a sponsorship kit from the Buffalo Regional Programme Centre by letter or fax.

Q: If I apply for immigration at the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo, New York, can I have my interview at the Canadian Embassy in Paris, France?
A: No. If you find it more convenient to have your interview in Paris, you should submit your application to the Canadian Embassy in Paris. If you have already submitted your application to our office, and you now wish to transfer it to Paris, please send a fax or letter to our office and we will provide you with further instructions. You do not have to be living in the USA to submit your application to the Buffalo office. However, if you are required to attend a personal interview you must be prepared to travel to the USA. It is your responsibility to ensure you meet legal entry requirements for the United States. This office cannot intercede should US authorities refuse your admission.
Q: I cannot attend an interview in the USA? What should I do?
A: You may request a transfer of your file to another Canadian Embassy or Consulate. Send a written request to our office (or to whichever office that NOW has your file) and include your full name, mailing address, date of birth and file number. They will write to you and provide you with further instructions. You will be required to pay a file transfer fee. Once the new office receives the file, a new file number will be assigned to your application. Please allow 3-4 months for the entire file transfer process to be complete. You can expect to receive a 'letter of acknowledgement' from the new office once they have assigned a new file number. Please ensure that they have your most current mailing address.

Q: Do my spouse and children need to accompany me to the interview?
A: Children under the age of 18 years are NOT required to attend the interview. We request that both the principal applicant, his/her spouse and dependants over the age of 18 years attend the interview together. We understand that this is not always possible, or practical, due to travel costs and/or schooling. Please understand that the Immigration officer may insist on interviewing all adults included in the application.

Q: Can my spouse and I have our interviews in two different locations?
A: It is up to the discretion of the interviewing officer to determine if your spouse and older children (18 years of age, or older) need appear at the interview. If they must attend the interview, they will all need to be interviewed together with you, at the same office, on the same day.
